MILFORD, CONN. — The vivid oil painting “Yellow Diamond I” by Mary Lee Abbott (American, 1921-2019), an example of her spontaneous and expressive works, was the top lot at Shannon’s Fine Art Auctioneers April 30 when it made $106,250, including buyer’s premium, more than doubling its high estimate. A pioneering artist in the Abstract Expressionism movement, Abbott had an early interest in art, began training at 12 under George Grosz at the Art Students League, and later at the Corcoran Museum School of Art in Washington, DC. More highlights from this auction will be featured in an upcoming issue.
