LONDON — It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Michael Goedhuis.
Michael was an extraordinary presence in the world and will be profoundly missed by those around him. He was a devoted father, and is survived by his three beloved children and his vast inner-circle of family and friends.
Michael will be remembered for his impeccable taste and as a passionate scholar and pioneer in the art world, with his contributions leaving a lasting impression and legacy. His remarkable career spanned from investment banking in New York and London, to joining Lord Rothschild’s Colnaghi, specializing in Persian, Mughal and Islamic Art. In the 1990s he became the first dealer in the West to concentrate on the field of Chinese contemporary and modern art through a series of important exhibitions including the major exhibition at Sotheby’s, New York, in 2001, “China Without Borders.” In 2008 he assembled and curated the major contemporary Chinese art collection, the Estella collection, which was exhibited at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Copenhagen, and the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.
Michael’s keen interest in describing the cultural activity in China and its historical links to modern aesthetics led him to represent the best contemporary Chinese artists working today, alongside a new generation of Western artists, painters, designers and sculptors.
