Paint Decorated, Slide Lid, Book Shaped Box By George Robert Lawton, Jr. (1839-1883) Wisconsin. The slide lid is decorated with an eagle perched on a vase of flowers with the verse “When this you see / Remember Me / M C Lawton”. The binding of the book is decorated “Sabath School Library / G R Lawton / M R C Lawton / Wisconsin / April AD 1879. The intitials M R C refer to Matilda Rosinda Cynthia Lawton (1863 - 1940), daughter of George Robert Lawton, Jr. This box belongs to an important group of boxes attributed to Lawton and identified in Expressions of Inno-cence and Eloquence.
