A good assortment of estate-fresh materials was offered at Brookfield Auction’s most recent sale, April 30, conducted at the Litchfield Firehouse. Items from a Greenwich estate along with select consignments from homes from throughout Fairfield County and Chappaqua and Pine Bush, N.Y., were sold.
More than 275 lots were offered during the evening sale, which had a large crowd in attendance. Merchandise ranged from a Tiffany clock, select paintings and bronzes to garden statuary and furnishings.
Leading the auction was a rare Tiffany Chinese bronze and marble pagoda clock that had come from the Greenwich estate. Standing more than 2 feet tall, the clock retained a nice patina and was marked Tiffany & Co., New York. Bidding on the lot opened at $2,750, with competition coming from several in the room as well as a telephone bidder. Coming in rapid bursts, the clock was claimed by a bidder in the rear of the room for $4,887.
Carpets attracted attention from several telephone bidders as well as numerous people in the crowd, with an early Twentieth Century Sarouk with a nicely colored blue central panel and red borders leading the group at $3,162. Other carpets ranged in price from $747 to a low of $34 for a holey runner.
Another highlight of the auction was an oil on burlap, signed illegibly, and thought to be by a Polish artist. Three telephone bidders competed with an in-house buyer; the lot realized $2,760.
A Moderne glass-top dining table with a natural olive wood free-form base, consigned from the Chappaqua estate, was a good buy at $575. A pair of wooden carved gilt stools with upholstered tops brought $402, a large box of Marx trains made $287, and a small sterling box realized $345.
A large painting of a poppy field with a barn at the top of the hill attracted attention, selling at $575.
Sleepers in the auction included a nice hexagonal cast iron garden table in the leaf and grape pattern that went out at only $115, a folky cane with carved crocodile and Indian head handle at $80, and a Satsuma vase with “thousand faces” decoration that sold for $34.
