Probably the only thing that beats a day of great weather in the Adirondacks in early September is combining it with an antiques show, and that is just what happened on Saturday, the 16th. The Adirondack Mountains Antiques Show, marking its 15th year, brought 50 exhibitors to Byron Park in the Town of Indian Lake for this event that opened with a four-hour preview on Friday.

As in the past, some of the exhibitors set up under their own tents, about 15 had displays in the park’s pavilion and a large tent accommodated about 20 more. “Our gate was up from last year and the opening line of buyers was reminiscent of years past,” Jerry Oliver, who manages the show with Michael Gannon, said. This is the fifth year the show has been at Indian Lake and for the first ten years was staged at the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake.

The variety at this show seems to be endless and it is interesting to be stationed near the gate and watch the procession of objects leaving the park.

A pair of Old Hickory side chairs was carried out by one couple, canoe paddles proved to be popular, a large moose head went out on the back of a small utility cart, a trio of backpacks caught the interest of one woman, negotiations led to the sale of an early canoe, “Cabins For Rent” was lettered on an old board that was tucked under the arm of one shopper, and a lady left with two bobcats, one standing and the other lying down.

This is not a show for everyone, but if your interests even bend slightly toward rustic and camp furniture, hunting and fishing equipment, boats and a selection of taxidermy, then head for Indian Lake in 2007. The dates are September 14–15.
