POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — The Dutchess County Historical Society is seeking the return of several significant items stolen from its collection of Dutchess County Eighteenth, Nineteenth and early Twentieth Century artifacts and papers, including letters, photographs, military swords and fireman’s equipment relating to Dutchess County.
“The trade and public are respectfully requested to examine all such items pertaining to Dutchess County for accession numbers and/or the stamp of the Dutchess County Historical Society,” said Lou Lewis, the society’s secretary and counsel.
Reported stolen was a high chair with hand-riven splint seat (original seat), circa 1780, acquired in Dutchess County. It features nipple finials and foot rest and is 34 inches high. A mirror, wood with original glass, Chippendale-type and showing age with one ear missing, 18 by 11½ inches, is another significant item, as is a mid-Eighteenth Century blanket box, Hudson Valley, shoe foot, original blue-green paint, fishtail hinges and with accession no. 17. Also missing is a US musket, circa 1776, 42-inch barrel, overall length 57 inches, with ramrod and flintlock firing attachment. It was used by Zacharia Van Voorhis in the Revolutionary War.
