At the height of the Gilded age, in the year 1870, Henry C. Gibson hired the architect Frank Furness to renovate his new home at 1612 Walnut St. in Philadelphia. This home is featured in the book “Opulent Interiors of the Gilded Age.” First published in 1883 the book was a photo essay of 97 of the most
opulent homes ever built in the United States, including homes belonging to Ulysses S. Grant, William H. Vanderbilt, J. Pierpont Morgan, and others. Some of the objects offered in this auction are pictured in the pages of this book. In 1861 Henry Gibson chose Furness’ partner, George W. Hewitt, to design a 20,000 square foot “country house” in Wynnewood, PA currently known as Maybrook. Kamelot Auction House is pleased to offer over 200 lots, without reserve, that have spent the last 100+ years residing in these two mansions.
