IMPORTANT CIVIL WAR CARVED AND PAINT DECORATED CONFEDERATE
CEDAR CANTEEN. Carved by Captain Vincent Mountfort of Company K, in the Twenty-Fourth Regiment of Maine Infantry, he served in the Department of the Gulf during the seige of Port Hudson, Louisiana. This canteen commemorates the end of the battle of Port Hudson, on July 9th, 1863, ending the longest seige of the Civil War and in American history. Subsequently Vincent Mountfort was commissioned First Lieutenant of Company K and would join the 1st District of Columbia Cavalry Regiment. He died on February 6th, 1864 at Sycamore Church. Later G.A.R. Post No. 22 in Brunswick, Maine would be named after him.
