EAST DENNIS, MASS. — On March 13, Eldred’s conducted a charity auction of Women in the Arts to benefit WE CAN, a Harwich, Mass., women’s empowerment organization. The auction featured 155 lots of artwork created exclusively by women, many of whom were forgotten or overlooked, with dates ranging from the Nineteenth to the Twenty-First Century. Making the most impact was Theresa Ferber Bernstein’s (American, 1890-2002) “Streetworkers,” an oil on canvas painting of men at work, likely in New York City. Signed and dated “T. Bernstein ‘15” to the lower right, the 21-by-23-inch framed painting achieved $12,800 with the buyer’s premium and earned the sale’s top spot. A more comprehensive review of the sale will be in an upcoming issue.
