  • Forty-Six Years Young: Milford Show Starts Season Strong

    MILFORD, N.H. – It’s hard to believe that Jack Donigian has been running weekly fall and winter shows for 46 years. But he has. This year’s season began on October 16. The best word to describe these shows is “eclectic.” Another word would be “friendly,” both to buyers and sellers. The shows are conducted in a large health club facility with easy exhibitor load-in. There will be a show every Sunday through March 26 of next year with the exception of Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Located on Main Street (Route 7) a few minutes south of Great Barrington’s center, the 5,000-square-foot showroom features nearly 30 dealers whose property is arranged in small, attractively arranged spaces not unlike what one would see at an antiques show.

    WOLCOTVILLE, IND. – In its twice-annual series of auctions, October 12-15, Strawser Auction Group sent more than 2,250 lots across its block. Among auctions of antiques (October 12), glass (October 13), ceramics (October 14), and one dedicated to majolica on October 15, more than 97 percent of the lots traded successfully.

  • Livezey Family’s Treasure Trove Of Historical Documents Exceeds $550,000

    SUDLERSVILLE, MD – Russum’s Furniture Auctioneers has been dispersing belongings of the Livezey and Firth families of Philadelphia and Maryland going back more than 300 years. The firm’s October 9 sale, the third and final, included books and pamphlets, some with Benjamin Franklin imprints – one signed by him and presented to the family – Revolutionary War manuscripts, including several by British General Howe, along with Eighteenth Century manuscript survey maps. Other books and pamphlets in this sale related to William Penn and Quakers, political happenings of the time; there were bound volumes of early Pennsylvania newspapers, more than 150 years of business records and ledgers, Nineteenth Century gold coins and currency, plus numerous other books belonging to the families and reflecting their wide interests.

    YPSILANTI, MICH. – Remember when telling time included the little hand and the big hand? Those times were back at Schmidt’s Antiques Clocks and Watches auction on October 1. Only a couple of digital clocks were even offered, and it wasn’t an electronic display. Catalog descriptions were detailed with even minor faults identified. Every clock and watch listed had been tested and their status as running or needing even minor adjustment at cataloging time was included in the description.

  • Rare Decorations Abound At Michaan’s Auctions

    ALAMEDA, CALIF. – A French Napoleon III faience figural compote on tripodal base, circa 1870, topped Michaan’s October 14 Traditional & Old Masters auction, going out at $25,830 to a first-time buyer bidding from across the pond. Comprising a low white circular bowl with two scroll handles applied close to the sides, the compote stood over a quadripodal base of goat legs, surrounded by a cylindrical pedestal on a flat, round base. It was painted a la Greque in shades of terracotta and black and bore black enamel interlaced “L”s to the base’s underside.

  • Eclecticism And Quality At Locati’s October Sale

    PINEVILLE, PENN. – On October 16, Locati LLC conducted its October 2022 sale, offering 535 lots with a 83 percent buy-through rate, totaling about $251,000. The category ratio was like many collective estate auctions, weighing heavily with fine art and decorative art and a handful of watch and jewelry lots, and the top sellers mirrored this distribution. However, the highest-achieving lots were mostly unusual selections, and each were either on the higher end of their estimates or surpassed them, some several times over.

    NEW YORK CITY – On October 12, concurrent with 66 lots of contemporary art, Doyle offered 54 lots of Latin American art, headlining the collections of Cuban-born artist and collector, Hernán García, and a Miami, Fla., gentleman. The 120-lot auction of Twentieth Century abstract works and Latin American art achieved a total of $1,156,441, exceeding the sale’s $875,600 low estimate, with 81 percent of lots selling.
