CLEVELAND —Rachel Davis Fine Arts’ March 18 auction included a silver gelatin photograph from 1930, by Margaret Bourke-White (American, 1904-1971). Used on the announcement for her new studio in New York City, her “’Sixty-First Floor, Chrysler Building,” image was signed in pencil on the mount, and also included a personal note in ink, ”It is going to be lovely Arthur, I am going to have a deep rose carpet which should make a good background for the glass and wood and aluminum furniture. Walls the faintest shade of gray-green, with two shades green fabric in one or two of the chairs. I wish you could have been around to help me with this. The feature will be my gold fish tank and underneath the gold fish tank will be a miniature __ folded away out of sight.  Always M.” The 5½ by 3¾ inch image came to the block with a $30/50,000 estimate; it sold for $121,000, including the buyer’s premium, to a phone bidder after strong bidding across all platforms. The provenance of the photograph is from the family of Arthur Gray, to whom the note was addressed. A full review of the sale will appear in a future issue.
