PROVINCETOWN, MASS. — James R. Bakker Antiques set a dozen new records on August 6 in their Summer Live Online-Only Auction, including a remarkable final price of $8,750 for a rare 1958 white-line woodblock print, “Dory Fishermen #3,” by Angéle Myrer. Other Provincetown prints did well, including a work by Ferol Warthen at $3,150, a rare piece by Mary Mullineaux for $3,125 and a beautiful print with accompanying woodblock by Agnes Weinrich at $3,000.
A 1988 Long Point Gallery portfolio of original prints by 12 artists, once owned by Varujan Boghosian, sold at $8,750. Three early works by Anne Packard, who celebrates her 90th birthday this summer, also did well with a 1981 view of Provincetown selling at a final price of $10,625, as well as her 1976 painting, “The Dory,” selling at $5,313. Other contemporary Provincetown artists’ results included a large oil by John Dowd depicting a historic National Seashore dune shack for $7,500, joined by “Fish Shack,” one of four lots by T.J. Walton at $3,250 and a 12-by-12-inch canvas of “Highland Light” by Robert Cardinal for $2,625. Photography was represented by a 1995 print titled “Hopper’s Window” by Joel Meyerowitz, achieved four times its estimate at $1,250.
Historic paintings did well, including a 1931 portrait of a female sailor by William Cheney selling above its $500/700 estimate for $1,500, an early Mary Hackef painting depicting the Hatch Shell in Boston that sold for $2,500 and several unsigned American and Provincetown School paintings all selling above the $1,000 mark.
George Yater’s watercolor, “Fish Market,” was bid to $7,500, the third-highest price for a piece by the artist. Post-auction sales were also strong, including the 1946 acrylic painting, “Two Horses,” by Peter Busa selling for $7,500 and Leo Manso’s collage, “Untitled I,” selling for $1,250.
