MELBOURNE, FLA. — Mathesons’ Gallery conducted a Fresh Estates auction on September 17, offering more than 275 pieces from a prominent local collection of Asian art and artifacts, as well as a selection from a major Maxfield Parrish collection. Leading the sales was an important bronze that belonged to neither of these categories, a trotting horse by Piotr Karlovich von Jürgensburg (Russian, 1805-1867). Known for his small and large scale equestrian bronzes, Von Jürgensburg was a court favorite and especially praised by Nicholas I. The bronze’s base was inscribed in Cyrillic, and more than doubled its high estimate at $20,400. More on this and other lots to follow.
