A French Antique 18 Karat Gold and Silver Top Necklace- Price Upon Request
A French Antique 18 karat gold and silver top necklace with diamonds, peridots, grossularite garnets, pink topaz, aquamarines and chrysoberyls. The graduated, foiled colored stones are framed and spaced with rose-cut diamonds weighing approximately 4.60 carats. The closed backs are decorated with a deeply carved swirl motif. Circa 1860's. This necklace was the property of the Estate of Quincy Adams Shaw, thence by descent. He was an important businessman, having invested in copper mining. He lived in Paris in the 1850’s where he became involved in the artistic world and began collecting. “Necklaces were short [in the early 19th C.]...Typically, they consisted of a rivière of gems.... The strong emphasis on colour was further underlined by the technique of ‘foiling’ each coloured gem....” -Mascetti and Triossi.
