Westerwald Gray Stoneware Salt-Glazed Cask- Price Upon Request
Rare Westerwald gray stoneware salt-glazed cask, keg, with pewter spigot, with a portrait and seal of Victor Amadeus, circa 1690-1700, measuring 13 inches long by 14 inches high on stand. There is chipping to bung rim caused by years of use, else excellent and original. A robust example, rarely encountered molded, tooled cask featuring impressed and applied ornament, including armorial and portrait; centering the bung are bands of applied repeating decorative devices each displaying wreath and lion motif against diapered ground [symbols of royalty]. The barrel rests within the original carved walnut cradle featuring four carved lion heads; carved pyramidal devices terminate each end of base rails.
