ZURICH, SWITZERLAND — Sotheby’s set a new world auction record for Félix Vallotton November 29, when “Au Marché” sold during the Swiss Made-Swiss Art auction for $3,447,591, following intense bidding in the room and on the telephone.
The auction totaled $7.37 million, led by this striking example from the artist’s coveted Nabi period that shows bold color and robust outlines. Another Vallotton work, the interior, “La cuisinière,” performed well above estimate, reaching $986,996. The auction results confirm Vallotton’s place both on the Swiss market and the wider international stage.
All prices reported include the buyer’s premium and were converted from Swiss francs to dollars at presstime.
