LARCHMONT, N.Y. — A pair of Gio Ponti sculptural wood chests found wanting bidders in Clarke Auction’s 395 lot sale March 26. With competitive bidding on the phone, online and in person, the pair bested their high estimate to pull in a solid result at $40,000. The chests came from a Scarsdale, N.Y. estate, each with four drawers and applied rectangular handles above tapered legs.
Following the chests was a monumental Charles Dufresne oil painting, achieving a healthy result of $22,500. Furniture works by Paul Evans peaked bidding interest with a welded metal round table bringing $16,250 and a three bay wall mounted shelving unit doing better at $18,750.
A complete report on the auction will follow in an upcoming edition.
