CINCINNATI, OHIO — Hindman’s March 30 American Furniture, Folk & Decorative Arts sale featured 324 lots, including four bottles by Andrew Clemens (American, 1857-1894), all of which sold above or within expectations. Earning the top price of the sale at $151,200, and nearly doubling its high estimate, was a pair of Clemens’ “Sweetheart” sand bottles for Charles and Maggie Bramar, each dated 1883. The bottles had descended in the Bramar family and featured distinctive and different decorative motifs: a galloping horse and sailing clipper ship on Charles’ bottle, a bouquet of flowers and nesting birds on Maggie’s bottle. Sand bottles are, in themselves, rare survivors but pairs are even more rare. Furthermore, this pair is believed to be the earliest known such example. A private collector had the winning bid. Prices quoted include the buyer’s premium; a more extensive review of the sale will be featured in an upcoming issue.
