MIDDLEBORO, MASS. — A 15-by-8-foot oil on canvas, probably meant to be used on the ceiling of an Italian palace and attributed to Giovanni Giambattista Tiepolo (Italian, 1696-1770) earned $128,000 and top lot honors at White’s Auction Gallery’s April 16 sale. It sold to a determined phone bidder, who was competing with an almost as-determined bidder in the room. A small collection of rare early telephones brought a collector from Ohio who went home with some of them. Combined, the six lots of phones earned more than $102,000. Gold jewelry did well, as did a coin collection and a collection of superb Victorian silverplated bride’s baskets. A small collection of Florida paintings drew active phone bidding, and a collection of comic books also did well, led by a lot of nine Golden Age crime comics which sold for $2,684. Prices quoted include the buyer’s premium; a full report will follow.
