KANSAS CITY, MO. — Circle Auction’s 2023 Spring Art, Antiques & Jewelry sale brought 178 lots of Americana, fine art and jewelry to the podium, as well a number of documents showing desirable signatures. The top lot of this category, and of the auction, was a 1797 letter from George Washington to Ludwell Lee of Shuter’s Hill, Alexandria, Va. The letter dates to a few months after Washington’s second term as president, and is one of a small number of correspondences from this period at Mount Vernon. Following his death in 1799, his wife Martha Washington burned many of his personal papers for the sake of family privacy. This scarce example was bid to $11,300. More on this and other winning lots to follow in an upcoming issue.
