NEW YORK CITY — Three of the 193 lots in Swann Auction Galleries’ April 3 African American art sale were the work of John Biggers (1924-2001), including the sale’s top lot: “Death and Resurrection,” which achieved $197,000, including the buyer’s premium. The 40-by-60-inch oil on linen canvas composition, painted during what the catalog called “the artist’s twilight years,” manifested the culmination of his study of African cultural practice. It was not the first time the house had offered the work (previously in April 2019), which had been commissioned directly from the artist in 1996. More highlights from this sale will be featured in an upcoming issue.
