LITCHFIELD, CONN. — Though a Ptolemaic-style carved white marble torso from the Nineteenth Century was the top lot at $9,750, Litchfield Auctions shared that the best result of their February 4 sale was a painting by Czech-Austrian artist Adolf Chwala (1836-1900). The Romantic oil on canvas alpine lake scene (shown) was bid past its $2/3,000 estimate to achieve $9,100. Winter Impressionist Painting Warms Up JMW Bidders
KINGSTON, N.Y. — JMW Auction Service conducted its 2026 Winter Eclectic Estates Auction on February 6, offering 559 lots. Leading the sale at $16,250 was an Impressionist oil on board of people walking in the snow, which was attributed to Alfons Walde (1891-1958). Painted circa 1940s, the work contained two German stamps on its reverse. Although unsigned, “Walde” was written on its reverse in pencil. Morrison (Ojibwe, 1919-2000), often celebrated as the “grandfather of Native Modernism,” signed and dated this 1963 work to the lower right.
