OAKLAND, CALIF. — A hazy sky lingered over a forested valley and the boisterous river the flowed through it, all in front of a towering, sharp mountainside in the American artist Albert Bierstadt’s oil painting, “Passing Clouds Over the Mountains,” which brought $102,850 in Clars Auction Gallery’s September 17 sale.
Measuring 42 ¼ by 32 ½ inches, the elaborate landscape painting was the subject of just enough interest to teeter over the $100,000 high estimate.
Modern prints followed behind, with a 1972 Andy Warhol color silkscreen print, “Sunset,” capturing $36,300. The mirage-like print featured a light blue sun in front of a hazy red-orange sky, numbered 34/470. Hand in hand, a Roy Lichtenstein color silkscreen print, titled “I Love Liberty,” featuring the Statue of Liberty in the artist’s signature style, also went out the door at $36,300.
