DALLAS — An Imperial Fabergé diamond set and enameled gold-mounted bowenite egg-shaped frame belonging to Empress Maria Feodorovna led Heritage Auctions’ May 16 Fine Silver & Objects of Vertu Signature auction and its May 17 Imperial Fabergé & Russian Works of Art Signature auction, which collectively realized more than $7 million. It belonged to an extremely small group of egg-form frames known to have been produced by Fabergé in the workshop of Mikhail Perkhin before 1899. The egg featured a diamond-set bezel, two-color gold mounts, enamel in opaque red and white and green and red translucent guilloche enamel. It was set apart from other extant models because of the Imperial provenance of the frame and the presence of its original presentation case, which encouraged bidders to push the egg to $750,000, selling for more than three times its high estimate. The top-selling lot of the Fine Silver & Objects of Vertu auction was an R&S Garrard & Co. silver wine cistern, which earned $187,500. Further review of these auctions’ results will feature in an upcoming issue.
