Important pair of late 18th century English enamel knobs depicting a hot air balloon and the name: BLANCHARD. The first manned balloon flight in America was flown by JEAN-PIERRE BLANCHARD from the Philadelphia jail yard on January 9, 1793. The flight was witnessed by President George Washington, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson, to mention a few. Blanchard flew his balloon safely, about 15 miles, and landed in New Jersey!
