This summer, $105,000 was the magic number at Braswell’s Stamford Auction. The second session of featured art from a prominent family of collectors included a surprising oil on canvas, which achieved that price. The painting, measuring 64 by 39 inches and depicting a young Balinese girl dancing, was signed indistinctly with overpainting on the signature. With active bidders narrowing after $40,000 to a single telephone bidder and a bidder on the floor, the painting finally sold for $105,000 to the floor bidder. Lightning struck again later when a rare Gustav Stickley oakcupboard top sideboard, estimated $40/60,000, hammered for$105,000, realizing a total price of $120,750. The bidding startedat $15,000 and quickly proceeded to $70,000, where it narrowed totwo phone bidders. One of these bidders represented a New York Cityclient, while the winning bidder was an anonymous establishedcollector. Prices reported include buyer’s premium. A third session of art from the same estate will be offered in the fall. Stamford Auction Gallery conducts auctions every other Tuesday featuring decorative and antique estate properties.
