Antique, art and jewelry collectors had the opportunity to bid on unique finds at Dallas Auction Gallery’s September 10 auction, and competitive bidding throughout the evening generated prices well above estimated highs, as well as some exciting moments.
Several works on canvas topped the sale, while other fine art, porcelain and jewelry were among the highlights.
Top lot for the evening was an oil on canvas by Franz Richard Unterberger (Austrian, 1838‱902), whose painting depicting an Alpine landscape sold for $41,825, just slightly above the $35,000 high estimate. The next lot was definitely something of a sleeper. Going out at $35,850, almost triple its high estimate, the surprise was an oil on canvas by Willy Eisenschitz (1889‱974), another Austrian artist, titled “Les Minimes,” which showed an idyllic tropical view from a window.
Other highlights included an eight-piece Russian Kornilow Brothers porcelain service set including a coffee pot with reticulated handle, a kovsh and large bratina, dessert plates, covered sugar bowl and two stylized cups and saucers, which realized $13,145.
An American Victorian arched-top stained glass window titled “Melody of Spring” had a $3/5,000 estimate, but sang a different tune when it sold for $13,145.
“Playmates” by Henry Turner Munns (British, 1832‱898) also sold for $13,145, more than double the high estimate for this oil on canvas of a young girl throwing a ball for her playmates, three dogs.
From Salvador Dali’s hand came a suite of five, hand colored etchings with original portfolio, titled “San Francisco,” that sold for $14,340. A Peter Raadsig (1806‱882) oil on canvas depicting shipwrecked survivors brought $11,950.
The final top lot in the fine art category was a suite of ten color lithographs from the American artist Alexander Calder. His “Our Unfinished Revolution” sold at $15,535, its high estimate.
Fine jewelry also achieved solid prices. A Patek Philippe platinum 18K gold and diamond watch realized $10,755, and a Chopard 18K gold and diamond necklace went out at $11,950.
A pair of Louis XVI-style gilt bronze mounted cassolettes raised on trifid gilt bronze stepped plinths surmounted by bronze mounted domed lids sold for $17,925.
