Images of Vermont by Charlie Hunter at Three Rivers
BELLOWS FALLS, VT. – Three Rivers Gallery will feature “: Images of Vermont,” showcasing pastels and oils by Charlie Hunter. The exhibition will run through November 3.
Hunter’s interpretation of the Vermont landscape is simultaneously affectionate and pointed. A fifth-generation Vermonter who spent the last ten years in the thriving Northampton, Mass. art scene, Hunter records the economic changes of the last 30 years in Vermont: the decline of small farms and the once-mighty machine-tool shops and towns of the Connecticut River Valley.
His unusually detailed pastels and heavily glazed oils convey an elusive, slightly menacing romantic outlook, leavened by a deadpan humor. Hunter has had one-man shows at several galleries in the Northeast and his work hangs in numerous private collections as well as the permanent collection of Yale University. In 1993 he was the recipient of the Canson-Talens International Pastel Grand Prize. Hunter now makes his home in Bellows Falls, Vermont.
Three Rivers Gallery exhibits oil paintings, portraits, pastels, watercolors, prints, sculpture and photography created by some of the finest regional artists. In addition to the fine arts offering, the gallery features a distinctive collection of fine crafts. Custom furniture designed and crafted by Peter Maynard is also on display.
The gallery is located in the Exner Art Block at 21 Canal Street. Hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 12 to 5 pm, with extended seasonal hours, or by appointment. For further information, 802/463-1991.
