At Sotheby’s, nearly 40 percent of lots offered were passed. Bidders remained undeterred in their pursuit of exceptional rdf_Descriptions, such as the vivid Fairfield County, Conn. canvaswork picture dating to about 1750 that surpassed estimate, selling to Old Saybrook, Conn. dealers Stephen and Carol Huber on behalf of a client for $203,750 (est $40/60,000).

At Christie’s the following day, Yardley, Penn. dealers C.L. Prickett Antiques picked up a Norwich, Conn. slant-front desk with blocked front, shell-carved interior and distinctively ornate feet for $314,000 (est $300/500,000).

Likewise, the single-owner sale of the Robert Crawford collection did well at Sotheby’s, realizing the Virginia antiquarian $1.6 million on Saturday, October 13.
