The Ceramics of Phil Rogers at Pucker Gallery

BOSTON, MASS. – Pucker Gallery has announced its first exhibition of works by internationally esteemed Welsh potter Phil Rogers. In a widely varied collection of shapes, glazes and decorations, Rogers pay homage to a rich history of ceramic traditions.

The artist combines elegant, classical Japanese, Korean, and Chinese forms, with less refined, more weathered forms akin to medieval British pottery and the Japanese folk pottery influences of Hamada Shoji and Bernard Leach. Yet he asserts a style and form of pottery that is a combination of his own physical presence and the contribution of his local surroundings.

Evident in every piece is the rustic beauty of central Wales where Rogers lives at his centuries old farm house and stables, pottery studio, workshop, and home.

His pitchers pay homage to Medieval English jugs and peasant jugs of the Nineteenth Century and each piece displays the freedom of form inherent to folk pottery, with its emphasis on utility, spontaneity of form and decoration.

These works will be at the gallery, 171 Newbury Street, January 6 through February 7. Hours are Monday- to Saturday 10am – 5:30 pm, Sunday 1 – 5pm.
