Frank Reaugh (American, 1860-1945), “Sheepherders Camp,” 1893, pastel on paper laid on canvas, 20 by 40 inches, set a new auction record at Heritage’s May 16 Texas Art Auction when it sold for $437,000.
DALLAS, TEXAS — Frank Reaugh’s “Sheepherders Camp,” a pastel on paper laid on canvas, painted by the Texas artist in 1893, was called by Reaugh expert Michael Grauer “the most important Reaugh painting to emerge in recent years.” Offered at Heritage Auction on May 16, it took top honors in a $926,000 selection of Texas art setting an auction record for the artist when it sold for $437,000 including the buyer’s premium.
Five bidders competed for the large work—20 by 40 inches—which doubled its estimate and more than doubled the previous artist record of $178,000, selling to a Dallas bidder on the phone. A complete review of the auction will be forthcoming.
