Impressionist summer landscape by American painter William Merritt Chase sold for $53,680.

Clarke Auction’s June 1 sale in Larchmont, N.Y., offered an Impressionist summer landscape by the distinguished American painter William Merritt Chase, which sold for $53,680, including premium.

The painting, which had been held in a private collection in Weston, Conn., for more than 30 years, had been purchased by the consignor for its pleasant palette and calming composition, with little regard for the artist who painted it. Clarke Auction was called in to appraise and sell the Weston art collection in October 2014 and it was then that the expertly painted oil on wood panel landscape came to light. The confidently applied brushwork, the loose impressionist manner and the lush green palette were all reminiscent of Chase’s Shinnecock, Long Island landscapes of the late 1800s.

A nice surprise at the sale was a work by Harold Weston (American, 1894-1972), an oil on canvas titled “Autumn Tapestry” whose jewel-like colors and composition enticed a bidder to take it far beyond its $1/1,500 presale estimate to a final price of $43,920, including premium. It was a record price for the artist, according to Nelia Moore, Clarke’s fine art specialist.

This 1958 work by South Korean artist Kim Heung-sou brought a strong $24,400.

The good results continued with South Korean artist Kim Heung-sou’s work, completed in 1958 and consisting of large blocks of color in heavy impasto that create the illusion of female heads before a row of buildings. Estimated just $4/6,000, it brought a strong $24,400 with premium.
