BOSTON — Doyle’s long-awaited first sale in Boston on June 8 featured Boston and Massachusetts material. Leading the auction was a finely detailed and well-executed panbone with a busy whaling scene. It included a three-masted whale ship flying a British flag and longboats with crews hunting a large whale. A bidder in the room unsuccessfully competed with phone bidders. Also doing well was an Impressionist painting of the Swan boats in the Boston Public Garden by self-taught artist Arthur Clifton Goodwin, which sold for $30,240. Boston silver, along with Massachusetts furniture also did well. Prices quoted include the buyer’s premium as reported by the auction house; a full report will be published in an upcoming issue.
