MARION, MASS. — A bust-length profile portrait of a young girl, wearing a red dress with lace collar and pearl necklace charmed its way to a first-place finish in Marion Antique Auctions’ Holiday Classic Sale on December 7. Titled “The Listener” and painted by Mary Lizzie Macomber (1861-1916), the 17 by 12 inch oil on panel composition had been exhibited at the Providence Art Club in its “The Best of Yesteryear, Oct. 28, 2005” exhibition. Estimated at $3/4,000, it did much better, rising to $17,920, including buyer’s premium. More highlights from the 544-lot sale will be reviewed in an upcoming issue.
