LAMBERTVILLE, N.J. — More than 700 lots crossed the block in Rago’s May 18–19 three-section design sale, with two lots — a 1925 Albert Cheuret Cobra console table with mirror and Wendell Castle’s 2013 unique carved ash chair “Tell The Trees” — each climbing into the six-figures. Cheuret’s console would sell for $193,750, and Castle’s chair took $175,000.
Cheuret’s Cobra console featured silvered bronze, marble and mirrored glass. It was exhibited by Cheuret at the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris.
Castle’s “Tell The Trees” chair had provenance to Barry Friedman Ltd, New York, and a private Los Angeles collection.
While Cheuret’s console fell between the estimate range, Castle’s chair more than doubled its $80,000 high estimate.
