Cymbeline Silk Embroidery, Nineteenth Century- Price Upon Request
The highly educated young ladies attending academies in the early Nineteenth Century were known to have studied Shakespeare’s plays and Greek mythology as well as a myriad of other disciplines. According to Shakespeare’s play, Cymbeline was the Roman Empire’s subservient king of Britain. The frame and glass are classic John Doggett who is document to have created frames and glass for Mrs Saunders’ and Miss Beach’s Academy. This is a silk and paint on silk, 23½ by 29½ inches framed. See Betty Ring’s Girlhood Embroidery (page 98) for another almost identical Cymbeline silk embroidery.
