This beautiful silk embroidered picture by Martha Hale from Susannah Rowson’s Academy, Boston, 1816, depicts the intriguing story of Achilles at the court of Lycomedes. It also demonstrates that these highly educated young ladies attending academies in the early Nineteenth Century, were among other things, studying Greek mythology. On the back is an early handwritten note describing the subject, artist, date, school and some provenance. It is silk and paint on silk, 25 by 32 inches framed.
