Pair of scrimshaw whale's teeth portraits, c. 1831, depicting "Captain James Townsend Master Ship Pindus" and "Mrs. J. Townsend", verso description "This Pair of Tattooed Teeth are Presented to Captain & Mrs. JAS Townsend on the occasion of their Tenth Wedding Anniversary by Officers and Crew of the Whaleship PINDUS" above harpoon decoration, second verso inscription reads "This Matched Pair of Teeth taken in the Northern Whale Fields in August 1830. Tattooed by Jos Hands of Providence Rhode Island", the ship Pindus was built in 1805 in New Bedford, MA, James Townsend was captain of its 1822 Pacific voyage which ended in Fairhaven, MA in 1825, both pieces numbered above portrait, and the PINDUS is depicted to the left of the Captains portrait and dated 1831, base chips, checking, wear consistent with age, approximately 6" long, 2 1/4" wide.
