Viktor Schreckengost (designer of the Jazz bowl, American, 1906-2008), "Stampede", a semi-porcelain bowl with free brush decoration under glaze, running zebra decoration on exterior, interior with clouds, artist signed on base, graduated ground coloration from brown to cream, remnants of old paper labels applied to base, light wear consistent with age and use, two small glaze flakes on rim, 6 1/4" high x 11 3/4" diameter. EXHIBITED: "Stampede" appears on the artist's entry card into the Cleveland Museum of Art's Exhibition in 1938 of work by Cleveland Artists and Craftsmen, AKA the "May Show," May 5th - June 13th. The notations on the entry card and a photographic image of the bowl, provided by Cleveland Museum of Art's archives, indicate the "Stampede" entry won first prize. PROVENANCE: Donated by Schreckengost to the Slater Memorial Museum of Norwich Connecticut in 1948, deaccessioned to benefit the Slater Memorial Museum's acquisition fund.
