Jared Bradley Flagg (American, 1820 - 1899), "Angelo and Isabella (Scene from 'Measure for Measure')", 1849, oil on canvas, Italian Renaissance style, signed and dated LR, depicts Shakespeare's devout and virtuous Isabella dressed in white, pleading for the life of her convicted brother to the perplexed Duke of Vienna, agonized by his impure thoughts, sitters are Louisa Hart (Flagg's second wife) and Henry Bedlow (actor, lawyer and later mayor of Newport, R.I.), contained in period frame, label verso with artist, title and date, wear consistent with age and use, relined, not examined out of frame, 50" h.
